I completely agree as an individual who is not only an advocate/activist for HIV/AIDS but is living with it. there are many challenges to overcome in public health why shouldn't we look globally.See what is working and improve on what is not! Why is there so much fear and can't all be blamed on greed or can it?

I hope they can indeed improve the health care system. It needs help now but some of the proposals out there aren't going to fix things.

Congrats to Dr. Benjamin and these other leaders! It's great to see public health get the recognition it deserves. Health care is not all about treatment!

Did you know that there are US citizens studying medicine in Cuba? And, some of them have already graduated, and are practicing in medically underserved communities in the US! I found their alumni association's website doing research on public health and medicine in Cuba. I am interested to see what they have to offer the US landscape and to the debate on universal healthcare. http://www.eusaa.info

I fully agree with your sentiments. It is a shame our leaders and too many citizen followers believe in profits before people. Unfortunately this menatality has crept into much of our society.

FYI: If you would like a more detailed look at a US reactor and how it might respond to an emergency, the novel "Rad Decision", written by a longtime engineer in the nuclear industry, is a decent place to start. It is free online, just Google the title or go to my website.

Tooth Decay is the most common disease yet easy to prevent and like other chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes and heart disease, are all food related and preventing DK may help prevent these other costly diseases also.
All cavities occur from acid demineralisation where carbohydrate rich food is left on teeth. Over 80 % of cavities (90% in children) occur inside pits and fissures on chewing surfaces where brushing cannot reach with fluoride toothpaste and saliva has no access to dilute carbohydrate like sugar and starch, neutralise acid and remineralise tooth like on easy to reach surfaces.

It is easy to reduce acid demineralisation by avoiding frequent consumption of sweets or chewing carbohydrate free food before eating and block access of further food. Calcium rich carbohydrate free food also aids neutralising acids and remineralising tooth, while chewing fibre like celery after eating helps saliva dilute carbohydrate like sugar and starch, neutralise acid and remineralise tooth like on easy to reach surfaces. Chewing gum is helpful but does not absorb and expel saliva to force it inside pits and fissures.
The Supertooth NDK (www.supertooth.org) project has sown that chewing toothpaste with a suitable fibre or elastomer has been shown to force the paste inside pits and fissures to improve remineralisation and increase acid resistance of tooth.
There needs to be a review of oral health promotion to improve personal tooth care with better evidence based advice to prevent DK.
