During National Public Health Week, APHA is taking many steps to create Healthiest Nation 2030 — literally.

We want you to join us.

On Monday APHA launched the 1 Billion Steps Challenge — an opportunity for you, your friends, your loved ones and your colleagues to improve our nation’s health while having fun at the same time. Each week APHA will award one walker with a $25 Amazon gift card, and on May 31 — the final day of the challenge — we’ll also choose one winner of a Fitbit Charge HR.

APHA’s goal is to reach 1 billion steps among all challenge participants by May 31.

“Walking is one of the most effective ways to prevent chronic disease, and we also know walking improves quality of life, mental health and healthy aging,” said APHA Affiliate Affairs Director Kimberly Moore Smith, MHSA. “One billion steps may seem like a lot, but I’m confident that we can do it together.

“National Public Health Week is all about making communities healthier. We believe the 1 Billion Steps Challenge will create a healthier nation by inspiring you to walk — and getting others to walk with you.”

Joining is simple: All you have to do is register and begin tracking your walks. If you have a Fitbit, smartphone or step-count device you can enter your steps on our registration page every day. If you don’t have a step counter you can simply estimate the distance of your walk or jog, and we’ll convert your miles into steps.

You can walk on your own or enjoy a little competition by joining one of four groups:

  • public health newcomers;
  • public health movers and shakers;
  • health influencers; or
  • friends of public health.
