Do you want to make the place you live healthier — or the healthiest?  You have 11 days to prove it by joining the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge, a partnership between the Aetna Foundation, APHA and the National Association of Counties.

May 31 is the deadline for small and mid-sized U.S. cities, counties and federally recognized tribes to submit applications for prizes totaling $1.5 million. Award-winners will show, over the course of several years, how practical, evidence-based strategies improve measurable health outcomes and promote health and wellness, equity and social interaction.

You or your organization — which can include government agencies, academic institutions, non-profits or more — are eligible to participate in the challenge if you fall into one of two categories:

  • Tier 1: cities, counties and tribal nations with populations between 65,000 and 250,000; or
  • Tier 2: cities, counties and tribal nations with populations between 250,001 and 600,000

This challenge aims to empower you to lead population health improvements. In a Health Affairs blog published today, APHA Executive Director Georges Benjamin, MD, and Aetna Foundation President Garth Graham, MD, MPH, said that Americans are significantly less healthy than they think, but are willing to take action to make their communities healthier.
