On April 4, APHA’s @PublicHealth and @NPHW hosted the 2018 NPHW Twitter Chat.
We had more than 6,000 tweets and 1,800 participants, but more importantly, a rich and diverse discussion of climate change, mental health, health equity, advocacy and public health students. We saw debates sparked, partnerships celebrated and excitement build for the 2018 APHA Annual Meeting and Expo.
We started with a question that spurred some inspiring comments on the importance of public health partnerships:
Q1 The NPHW 2018 theme is “Healthiest Nation 2030: Changing Our Future Together.” Who are you working with to create the healthiest nation? #NPHWChat pic.twitter.com/2LdszvwD96

We heard why our partners and members #SpeakForHealth:
Q2 APHA is asking members to #SpeakForHealth and demand stronger, fully funded public health. Why do you #SpeakForHealth? #NPHWChat pic.twitter.com/MsI9wx87SW

A2: Defunding public health is deadly. One AJPH study found high rates of “deaths from despair” among rural white Americans, showing that when communities decrease investment in public health, the consequences are devastating. https://t.co/tFrxq2iezV #ruralhealth #NPHWChat pic.twitter.com/x8ImEMdgix

A2: We #SpeakForHealth because important issues, like #climatechange and #education, affect our kids, yet too often kids have no voice in the political process #NPHWChat

1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience a mental health challenge. We #SpeakForHealth because our community members deserve access to evidence-based, effective behavioral health care. You can learn more about our mission here: [https://t.co/6MbosuTKlC] #NPHWChat https://t.co/u1hTsqJF4v

A2: We #SpeakforHealth because factors such as our race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status should not play a role in how healthy we are or how long we live. #NPHWchat pic.twitter.com/5cXxVRBiUi

We got everyone excited for APHA 2018 by talking about health equity! This year’s theme is Health Equity Now. We asked what health equity means to you:
Q3 APHA’s 2018 Annual Meeting theme is Health Equity Now. What does health equity mean to you? #NPHWChat pic.twitter.com/vTpMLIrHo9

A3 #NPHWchat
Water equity matters: Access to clean water is a prerequisite for healthy, thriving communities but too many communities of color, low-income communities, & rural communities are disproportionately impacted by contaminated water. #NPHW https://t.co/gLqPEvfrG8— Clean Water Action (@cleanh2oaction) April 4, 2018
A3: #HealthEquity is when all people, regardless of who they are or where they live, have the opportunity to live the longest & highest quality of life possible. #NPHWchat @publichealth @NPHW
