Just a handful of months from now, the APHA 2018 Annual Meeting and Expo will convene in San Diego with a rousing call to achieve health equity and justice for all. Make sure you’re among the thousands in attendance by registering today.

Registration for APHA 2018 is open! That’s right — registration is now officially open for this year’s APHA Annual Meeting, which runs Nov. 10-14 at the San Diego Convention Center and has a theme of “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Health Equity Now.” About 12,000 public health professionals from around the world are expected to attend the meeting, which highlights the latest and most innovative developments in public health science, practice and advocacy. While many of the meeting’s more than 1,000 scientific and poster sessions will focus on the overriding theme of health equity, presentations will cover the entire spectrum of the public health discipline, from the more traditional to the just emerging.

In addition to new science and practice, APHA Annual Meeting attendees can choose from a variety of networking, social and celebratory events, many of them organized and hosted by APHA member groups, its Student Assembly, and its state and local public health affiliates. Other highlights of the meeting include the Public Health Expo, where you can browse hundreds of booths representing public health schools, federal health agencies, public health publishers, advocacy groups, nonprofits and much more; APHA’s Global Public Health Film Festival, which will feature some of the year’s best in public health storytelling and communication; and APHA’s Social Media Lab, where attendees can learn how to optimize today’s social media tools from experts in the field.

Of course, health equity will be the main event at this year’s Opening General Session, which officially kicks off the 2018 APHA Annual Meeting on Sunday, Nov. 11. The session’s keynote speaker is renowned researcher and Harvard University educator David Williams, who’s authored more than 400 scientific papers, with much of his work focusing on the intersections between racism, social determinants and health. Joining Williams on the Opening Session stage will be U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, who will talk about the power of public health partnerships.

“We’re excited and honored to have two of the world’s leading public health figures launch our meeting,” said APHA Executive Director Georges Benjamin. “New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests 2017 will mark the third straight year that U.S. life expectancy has declined. We have our work cut out for us and this meeting will surely energize and equip us for the task ahead.”
