States struggle with growing prescription drug abuse, overdose epidemic

First the first time, two trends in preventable death have crossed data paths, one highlighting a public health success and the other a growing problem. Poisoning deaths, many attributable to prescription drug overdoses, now outnumber deaths due to motor vehicle crashes, reported officials at the ASTHO annual meeting.

CDC examines methadone risks, prevention strategy in teleconference

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed an alarming finding in a report released July 3: The prescription drug methadone was responsible for more than 30 percent of painkiller overdose deaths in 2009, despite accounting for just 2 percent of painkiller prescriptions.
